Pumpkin Carving Class at the Jaffrey Civic Center

EDIT: Extending registration deadline to Friday, October 20th to fill remaining seats!

The Civic Center is offering a class on Decorative Pumpkin Carving on Saturday, October 21st from 11 am to 2 pm. The class will be taught by visiting artist, Michael Oxx, from Derry, NH.

From doodling at a young age to being introduced to sculpting in high school, Michael has always been interested in the arts. As a kid, he was a huge monster movie fan and always wanted to work in the special effect industry. He attended the Tom Savini Special Effect Makeup Program in Monessen, Pennsylvania, and learned his craft from industry professionals and very talented artists. Michael sculpts small vessels and relief sculptures, to monster maquettes and prosthetics and decided to start carving pumpkins a couple of years ago "to give myself another medium to work with besides clay and wax." The cost of the class is $10 per person. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult to help with cutting the pumpkin. Attendees should register by Friday, October 20th and plan to bring their own pumpkin and a snack or lunch to the class. (The class needs 5 people in order to run). For more questions or to register, please contact the Civic Center at 532-6527 or email us at:

We are always seeking instructors for some interesting art classes for both children and adults. If you have a class you would like to teach, please contact us at the Civic Center. Our art classroom is currently available Monday and Tuesday mornings and afternoons, Thursday and Friday afternoons, or Saturdays. We would especially be interested in pottery or clay classes but we are open to all types of art instruction. For more information about teaching, please contact Regina Vorce at our main number 532-6527 or via email at

Open Studio

The 2nd floor classroom at the Jaffrey Civic Center is open and free to artists of all media-persuasion on Wednesday mornings from 9- 12 noon. Bring your still life set-up, your reference photos, a friend to model, your paints, pastels, easels, #2 Ticonderogas, camera, crayons, and your ideas to share with fellow artists. If you need a boost to get back into finishing or starting a canvas, if you're not motivated because you paint alone and would like to be with others, if you don't have the right light or enough space to feel creative, come and join us. You don't have to commit to anything. Come when you can. We follow the Conant school system calendar, so if they are closed, we are as well. You don't have to sign up or egister, but if you'd like to call to find out more about this, please call 532-6527 or e-mail at
