Sign up early to make certain that there’s enough enrollment to run the class. All levels and beginners are welcome!
At the first class I will cover the basics of pastels: Soft pastels, different brands, soft pastels vs hard pastels, as well as pan pastels and pastel pencils. Next, I will speak about different pastel papers and surfaces. I will then do a brief 10-minute demonstration. The remaining class time will be spent drawing or transferring the subject matter onto sanded paper followed by blocking in the first layer of pastel. The remaining two classes will consist of a half-hour demonstration followed by painting time and teacher guidance. A materials list will be supplied along with a photo reference that I will be using for my demonstration. You may follow along with me or bring your own photo reference. Note: if my reference photo is used, you may give your painting away but it cannot be for sale as it is my composition and my reference material. Photocopy, laptop, or tablets may be used. Materials List:
• Backing board. 18 x 24 or larger is a good size. Must be firm enough to tape your pastel paper onto. (clip board, 1/4-inch foam core etc)
• Low tac masking tape
• Scissors
• 18” metal ruler
• X-acto knife
• Paper towels
• Reference photo: photocopy, laptop, or tablet
• An assortment of soft pastels and pastel pencils
* Please note that I bring a large selection of pastels to each class that students may use. I don’t expect artists new to the pastel medium to spend a lot of money on supplies. Bring what you have. I offer sanded paper for purchase of $5/sheet.
