DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, March 6\, 2026\, at 5:00 PM\, the Jaffrey Civic Center will hold the fifth talk in the fifth season of “Stories to Share.” The speaker will be Kin Schilling. The title of her talk will be “Stories from the Past.” \nKin Schilling is the founder of the Cornucopia Project\, which she started in 2005. While CEO of the organization she sparked a farm to school movement that combined community gardening\, sustainable living\, health\, nutrition\, and education. Before the Cornucopia Project\, in 1992\, Kin opened Aesop’s Tables\, a café located inside the Toadstool Bookstore in Peterborough. She is an artist\, illustrator\, and photographer whose work has been shown throughout the Monadnock Region. She was recognized as a 2019 “Women of Monadnock” by New Hampshire Magazine. \nThe Jaffrey Civic Center is a 501(c)3 non-profit cultural facility founded in 1966. The mission of the Jaffrey Civic Center is to provide and sustain a public venue where citizens\, residents\, and visitors of the Monadnock region can pursue artistic\, educational\, and civic activities. The Center’s goal is to contribute to the cultural enrichment and enlightenment of the community. \nThe program is free of charge\, but to help support this event and others like it\, donations are appreciated. SUMMARY:EVENT: Lecture Series: Why is this art?
DESCRIPTION:Understanding Cubism: Why is this art? Picasso and Braque and Cubism \nEver wonder why artists create crazy abstraction instead of copying the realism behind the images?  Want to know a bit more about the changes in artistic styles from the late nineteenth into the twentieth century?  Four informal spring presentations by artist and retired professor Susan Wadsworth will welcome questions and challenges on the part of the audience at the Jaffrey Civic Center. \nOn Wednesday March 18 at 1:30 p.m\, the series will examine the development of Cubism: “Picasso and Braque and Cubism: Why is this art?”  Why did Picasso and his friend Georges Braque want to flatten the space of his paintings?  What were they thinking and what styles did they want to create?  Can you figure out the puzzle of the still life and landscape forms in the paintings? \nSusan Wadsworth is an artist and critic from Rindge.  She has a Master of Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a MA in art history from Tufts.  She taught art history and studio art in the Humanities Department at Fitchburg State for 27 years before retiring in 2019.  She has made dozens of presentations on a wide variety of artistic styles and history\, and her pastel works have been shown in numerous shows throughout New England.  The series began last spring with a discussion of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism as well as the art and music of German Expressionism. \nThe series is free\, but donations are welcome.  The Jaffrey Civic Center is at 40 Main Street\, Jaffrey NH. \nSign up here
