SUMMARY:CLASS: (3 of 5) Drawing for Beginners I & II with Marylise Reilly-Fajal
DESCRIPTION:Tuition: $160 per student for 5 classes OR \n$190 for 6 classes (includes optional portrait session on May 22) \nThe Jaffrey Civic Center is pleased to offer Drawing for Beginners I & II\, a comprehensive and inspiring course designed to build strong foundational drawing skills in a supportive studio environment. Taught by Marylise Reilly-Fajal\, the course introduces students to a wide range of subjects\, including objects\, flowers\, animals\, landscapes\, and portraits\, while developing essential techniques such as quality of line\, texture\, value\, shading and highlights\, space and perspective\, and composition. Each class features live demonstrations followed by guided drawing time with individualized instruction\, working from real-life setups—such as flowers\, cups and vases\, and fruit—to sharpen observation skills and capture the uniqueness and beauty of their subjects. Participants may also bring one or two reference photos\, such as pets or personal spaces\, to incorporate into their work. Drawing from real models strengthens artistic confidence and provides a foundation for many other creative disciplines\, including watercolor\, acrylic and oil painting\, illustration\, sculpture\, printmaking\, mixed media\, and even film-making\, making mastery of drawing a key skill that supports success across all artistic pursuits.

SUMMARY:WORKSHOP: Food for a Healthy Heart with Dr. Nora E. Hanke
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 2 from 12 – 2 pm \nHealthy plant-based diets benefit cardiovascular health because they contain no dietary cholesterol\, minimal saturated fat\, and abundant fiber. Eating this way has even been shown to reverse heart disease! \nThis 2hr. class features a video lecture\, discussion\, and the opportunity to taste plant-based dishes following cooking demonstrations. It provides an excellent overview of plant-based foods for a healthy cardiovascular system. Your instructor will be Dr Nora E. Hanke\, a physician and licensed Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine Food for Life instructor. She will point attendees to resources for adopting a low-fat\, plant-based diet. \nAccording to previous local participants\, “It is totally worth it!”; “Very well done and you get dinner/lunch.” \nRegistration 2 days before the workshop is required. \nSign up here.

SUMMARY:EVENT: Lecture Series: Why is this art?
DESCRIPTION:Why is this art? Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko \nEver wonder why artists create crazy abstraction instead of copying the realism behind the images?  Want to know a bit more about the changes in artistic styles from the late nineteenth into the twentieth century?  Four informal spring presentations by artist and retired professor Susan Wadsworth will welcome questions and challenges on the part of the audience at the Jaffrey Civic Center. \nThe third presentation will be on Wednesday May 20th at 1:30: “Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko: Why is this art?”  Why did Pollock drip paint on his canvases\, and what meaning is behind the colorful rectangles of Mark Rothko? \nSusan Wadsworth is an artist and critic from Rindge.  She has a Master of Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a MA in art history from Tufts.  She taught art history and studio art in the Humanities Department at Fitchburg State for 27 years before retiring in 2019.  She has made dozens of presentations on a wide variety of artistic styles and history\, and her pastel works have been shown in numerous shows throughout New England.  The series began last spring with a discussion of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism as well as the art and music of German Expressionism. \nThe series is free\, but donations are welcome.  The Jaffrey Civic Center is at 40 Main Street\, Jaffrey NH. \nSign up here
