The Jaffrey Civic Center is excited to announce the opening of Jeanne Duval: A Selection of Paintings That Reside in the Monadnock Region, September 18 through October 31, 2026. Opening reception Saturday, September 19 5 – 8 pm.
This is the first time in my life I have ever written an artist statement. I have always refused the request. I have already painted the painting, I should not be obliged to tell the viewer what to see and feel. My job is done.
Although not in my own words, this statement written by Jessica May for the Spanierman Gallery’s exhibition A NOBLE TRADITION REVISITED The contemporary American Still Life best describes my paintings. “A painter of landscapes and narrative scenes, Jeanne Duval is best known for her elegant and dramatic still life’s, which straddle the line between realism and surrealism”. “A principal objective for Duval is to take objects with universal familiarity and invest them with a sense of permanance. The result is an art filled with quiet tension in which ordinary motifs take on a life of their own”
